02 How we build

Software that's honest about what it knows.

What analytical software produces gets briefed to commanders, read into case files, and handed to prosecutors. That's a higher standard than a dashboard is held to, and it is the one we build to.

  • 01A clean negative is still an answer. Our tools are willing to say there is nothing there. The near-repeat test reports when a pattern is chance, and the series finder prints the baseline every finding has to clear.
  • 02Every result is explainable. A finding opens with the fields that produced it and the actual numbers behind it, in language an analyst can read out loud in a briefing.
  • 03Your data is yours. Import is local, analysis is local, storage is local. Nothing leaves the machine that imported it unless you switch on a feature that sends it, and the app names exactly what each feature sends.
  • 04It tells you when a method is struggling. Density surfaces warn when the kernel is too small to trust, thin-sample cells say so, and skipped calculations are reported rather than returned as silent zeros.
Why it mattersAn analyst's credibility rides on every number they brief. Software that dresses chance up as a finding, or quietly drops the rows it could not parse, spends that credibility for them. Ours doesn't.
Who we are

BAIR Systems is the company that builds and publishes MICHAEL. It was founded by Sean Bair, who worked as a police officer and a crime analyst, managed the Crime Mapping and Analysis Program, and has spent decades building analytical software for police, the DoD, academia, and private corporations. He founded BAIR Analytics, which was acquired by LexisNexis in 2015.

He teaches Strategy and Economics to graduate students at BYU's Marriott School of Business, and has written four books, two of them on crime analysis and AI in policing.
